How to Give Yourself the Best Chance in Your Bracket Pool

By Bob Digital (@BobbyDigital2 on X)

Hey WOLF Sports Fam,
It’s great to be back with you this week as we gear up for the madness of March. As many of you know from our recent WOLF Sports Twitter Spaces, we’ve been diving deep into the college hoops landscape, and now it’s time to apply that knowledge.

The bracket is out!
Selection Sunday marked the start of what is always a wild and exciting week in the world of sports betting. As soon as the show ends, the betting markets open fast—so you’ve got to be ready to evaluate brackets, futures, survivor pools, and, of course, your classic bracket contests.

Here are a few essential strategies to give yourself the edge in your pool:

1. Pool Size

The number of participants in your pool will dictate how risky you should be:

Small Pools (≤25 people):
Keep it simple. Stick with the favorites and avoid getting too cute with upsets. Tools like KenPom.com can help you stick to higher-ranked teams. Let your competition overthink and beat themselves.

Medium to Large Pools (25-500 people):
Time to take a few more calculated risks. This is where you can mix in a sleeper or two to differentiate yourself without going overboard.

Massive Pools (1,000+ people):
Now you’re looking for leverage plays. This doesn’t mean picking a 16-seed over a 1-seed, but fading a heavily picked team like Duke from your Final Four could give you an edge if they falter.

Rule of Thumb:
The smaller the pool, the more conservative your strategy. The larger the pool, the bolder you should be.

2. Leverage Opportunities

Use publicly available data to gain leverage. ESPN’s “People’s Bracket” is a great place to start.

Examples:

Mississippi State (-2) in the betting markets, but 59% of ESPN brackets are taking Baylor? That’s a great spot to pick Mississippi State.

Colorado State is the betting favorite, but 65% of brackets are backing 5-seed Memphis. Taking Colorado State gives you a sharp edge.

Even deeper into the tournament, look for public darlings like St. John’s, who is one of the most selected champions. Having Texas Tech knock them out early could give you extra equity.

3. Know Your Pool

Is your pool full of local fans?
If you’re in a Detroit-based pool, chances are there will be plenty of Michigan State picks. That gives you the chance to gain leverage by fading them, perhaps by riding with a team like Auburn or Iowa State instead.

EV > Fun (Sometimes)

I get it—this might not sound as fun as just riding your favorite underdogs. But if you’re playing to win, focusing on maximizing Expected Value (EV) is key.

Of course, you can still fill out a “fun” bracket for your own entertainment—but this advice is aimed at winning competitive pools with prizes on the line.

Best Bet: Round 1

Everyone loves a 12-over-5 upset, but this time we’re laying it with the 5-seed.

PICK: Oregon -7 vs. Liberty

Why we love it:

Travel Edge: Oregon will have strong fan support playing close to home in Seattle, while Liberty has to travel cross-country and play late at night Eastern Time.

Matchup Edge: Oregon center Nate Bittle should dominate against Liberty’s smaller lineup, which struggles on the boards.

Coaching Edge: Dana Altman is a tournament wizard, known for throwing curveballs with defensive schemes.

Free Throws: Oregon ranks in the top 50 in free-throw percentage (76.3%), which can be critical in tight tournament games.
